Big Ideas Math

This website contains online access to the Big Ideas Math! book and its associated resources.  Big Ideas Math! is the primary resource for student mathematics learning in grades 6-8 in Westfield Public Schools.  In addition to a full version of the textbook, there are online games, practice quizzes and interactive applets to support the mathematics learning of Westfield Middle School students.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard to empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. Khan Academy math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. 

 

Enrich maths

Enrich maths offers challenging and engaging mathematical games, problems, articles, and activities for mathematics learners of all ages.  It was designed to develop mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills in students and show rich mathematics in meaningful contexts.  Also, there are mathematicians who can help you to solve problems - just 'Ask NRICH'!

This site offers a wide variety of applications that allow for an interactive math experience.  You can create graphs, tables, equations, and geometric figures.  Use interactive applications to model fractions, solve algebraic equations, apply and use formulas...you can even track and graph noise levels.  Check it out!  


Desmos Graphing Calculator

Use this online graphing calculator to instantly graph any function.  Allows for multiple graphs on the same screen, zoom in or zoom out to see a graph in a different scale or call up a table of values for a function.


You Cubed

Some of the most influential ideas around learning math in the 21st century come from Professor Jo Boaler of Stanford University.  Dr. Boaler’s website, www.youcubed.org,  gives a snapshot into some of her teaching and learning ideas; along with activities for students and videos to boost student math learning.

The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives

This website contains dozens of online manipulatives to help students understand important math concepts.  Try Algebra Balance Scales to model solving algebraic equations, or the virtual geoboard to model properties of polygons.

MCAS Practice sites

The state of Massachusetts has reconfigured the MCAS test to reflect the new Common Core state standards.  The questions will emulate those that were in the PARCC assessment, in addition to those MCAS questions that were used in the past. Also, students will eventually be asked to take the MCAS on a computer, starting with 4th grade and 8th grade in 2017.  The three sites below give practice for both Common Core paper based tests and computer based tests similar to those that will be on the MCAS.
